What is the Certificate of Puerto Rican Citizenship?

It is a certificate issued by the Puerto Rico Department of State that reaffirms a person's connection to Puerto Rico, used for certain legal, official, or academic procedures, as applicable.

Who can apply for this certificate?

You must meet at least one of these criteria: (1) be born in Puerto Rico; (2) have a parent born in Puerto Rico; or (3) have resided in Puerto Rico for at least one (1) year.

What documents do I need to process it?

Valid photo identification (preferably a passport or official license/ID) and your birth certificate are required. If you were born outside of Puerto Rico, the birth certificate of your father or mother born in Puerto Rico is also required.

What is the processing time?

Approximately 30 days. There is no expedited service due to delays in the government process.

In what language and format is it broadcast?

It is issued in Spanish, in printed form. You can also select the electronic format (PDF) as an additional option when ordering.

How are shipments made?

The cost is calculated when ordering. In Puerto Rico, items are shipped via USPS. In the United States, items may be shipped via USPS or FedEx. FedEx is used for international shipments.

Who can apply?
