Right to request
- The death certificate can only be requested by the parents, legal representatives, custodians, guardians, or heirs of a deceased person.
New format
- Since July 2010, this certificate has an updated security format and is only valid if issued after that date. In addition, it is red in color for easy identification.
Historical record
- The Demographic Registry of Puerto Rico keeps records since its creation in 1931, but it also has numerous previous registrations, since 1885, belonging to the old "Civil Registry".
- For data prior to 1885, we suggest searching FamilySearch.org or Ancestry.com.
Type
- Regular: Most common, in letter size.
- Literal or long: Uncommon, in legal size; it is a copy of the original inscription. Includes additional details, such as time of death. Processing time is up to 30 days.
Language
- Automatically published in Spanish and English.
Correction of errors
- We only obtain the certificate as registered in the Demographic Registry.
- However, we can make corrections or changes, for an additional cost, through this other link.
Processing and shipping time
- Regular: 10 working days, plus shipping time.
- Urgent: 3 to 5 working days, plus shipping time.
- Shipping cost: is automatically calculated according to the address provided when ordering.
- Shipments to Puerto Rico and the United States: Through federal mail (US Postal Service).
- International Shipments (including United States): Via FedEx®.
