Certificate of Citizenship of Puerto Rico

This certificate is an official document issued by the government of Puerto Rico confirming your Puerto Rican citizenship.

It may be useful for legal and official procedures, including matters related to Spanish citizenship, as well as for other purposes where you need to formally prove your connection to Puerto Rico.

• 🇪🇸 A common requirement in certain cases involving Spanish citizenship.
• 🌍 It can be used for official and legal proceedings where formal proof of Puerto Rican citizenship is required.

You need to comply with only one (1) of the following requirements:

• ✅ Be a native of Puerto Rico.
• ✅ Have a parent who was born in Puerto Rico.
• ✅ Have resided in Puerto Rico for at least one (1) year.

⚠️ Birth certificate from Puerto Rico:
It must be the standard version (letter-size), issued on or after July 2010 (usually blue), not the “literal” or “long” version . This applies to your certificate if you were born in Puerto Rico, or to that of your father or mother if you are applying based on filiation.

🇵🇷 Born in Puerto Rico:

1. Valid photo ID: preferably a passport, driver's license, or official ID.
2. Copy of your birth certificate.

🌐 Born outside of Puerto Rico:

1. Valid photo ID: preferably a passport, driver's license, or official ID.
2. Copy of your birth certificate.
3. A copy of the birth certificate of your father or mother who was born in Puerto Rico.

🏠 If you are applying based solely on your residence in Puerto Rico:

1. A valid Puerto Rican driver's license.
2. Copy of your birth certificate.

💍 If your name changed due to marriage: When placing your order, the system will ask you to upload a digital copy of your marriage certificate as proof of the name change.

⚠️ Only if you apply based on residency: If you obtain this certificate solely because you have resided in Puerto Rico, this alone does not establish the status of “Puerto Rican by origin” required to qualify for the expedited process for Spanish citizenship.

An apostille may be required if the document is to be used outside of Puerto Rico and the United States, depending on the requirements of the receiving authority.

🇪🇸 If you'll be using it in Spain:

• If you already have an appointment or plan to use it soon: order the Certificate of Citizenship now and have it apostilled.
• If you don't have an appointment yet or don't know when you'll need it, order the Certificate of Citizenship without an apostille now. You can request the apostille later.

If you need an apostille, remember the general rule: one apostille is required for each original document.

For example:

• If you only need to have your Puerto Rican Certificate of Citizenship apostilled, add one (1) apostille.
• If you also need to have another document, such as a birth certificate, apostilled, you must add an additional apostille for that document.
