Description
What is the Certificate of Citizenship of Puerto Rico?
Since 2007, there is what is known as the Certificate of Citizenship of Puerto Rico. This Certificate is a document validated by the Supreme Court of PR according to the case Ramírez Ferrer v. Mari Brás, 144 D.P.R. 141 (1997).
PR citizenship is generally recognized internationally. Spain, for example, allows a PR person to present such evidence to preferentially acquire Spanish citizenship. This is because Spain specifically recognizes Puerto Ricans as coming from an "Ibero-American country". Thus, they are eligible to be granted dual nationality. On the other hand, it is important to note that with this Certificate you will lose your U.S. citizenship. no lose your U.S. citizenship or any other citizenship you may have.
Who qualifies for the PR Citizenship Certificate?
Citizenship of PR is available to those persons under any of the following 3 categories:

- a person not born in PR who is a US citizen and is the child of at least one (1) parent born in PR; or,
- A person not born in PR who has been declared a citizen of PR by a final and firm declaratory judgment issued by a PR court.

Summary of steps to follow to process your certificate:

If you were born outside of PR, then option 2 (above) applies. In this case, you must put your order and attach or add your Birth Certificate, and also the birth certificate of one (1) of your parents born in PR (issued on or after the 1st of 2010).
