This document:Certificate of Citizenship of Puerto Rico
⚠️ Apostille: Only if the Certificate of Citizenship will be used outside of Puerto Rico or the U.S. The birth certificate requires an apostille only if one is also required for it.
It is an official document issued by the government of Puerto Rico that confirms Puerto Rican citizenship. It can be used for certain legal and official procedures, including some related to Spanish citizenship.
Who can apply?
You must meet at least one of these requirements:
✅ Be a native of Puerto Rico.

✅ Have resided in Puerto Rico for at least one (1) year.
Requirements
🔒 You keep your original documents. When you place an order with us, you only need to upload legible digital copies (PDFs or photos) of the required documents. You do not need to mail the original documents.
⚠️ Birth certificate from Puerto Rico: It must be the standard version (letter-size), issued on or after July 2010 (usually blue), not the verbatim or long version. If you are applying based on parentage, this requirement applies to the certificate of your father or mother who was born in Puerto Rico. If you do not have the required certificate, you can add it to this same order.
🇵🇷 If you were born in Puerto Rico:
Valid photo ID: preferably a passport, driver's license, or official ID.

Valid photo ID: preferably a passport, driver's license, or official ID.

A valid Puerto Rican driver's license.
Copy of your birth certificate.
💍 If you changed your name upon marriage: Attach a digital copy of your marriage certificate as proof of the name change.
⚠️ If you are applying solely on the basis of residence: This certificate, on its own, does not prove that you are a Puerto Rican by origin, which is required to subsequently qualify for the expedited process for Spanish citizenship.
⏱ Processing time
The current estimated processing time is up to 4 months, due to the volume of pending applications at the State Department.
⚠️ Availability Notice: House Resolution 348 proposes to eliminate the future issuance of this certificate. It was approved by the House of Representatives, but the legislative process is still pending; in the meantime, the certificate remains available.See the summary and status of the proposal.

💲 Shipping costs are calculated at the time of order.

🌍 Do you need an apostille?
An apostille may be required to use the document outside of Puerto Rico and the United States. Please confirm the requirements with the authority that will receive the document.
🇪🇸 If you will be using the certificate in Spain:
If you already have an appointment or plan to use it soon, you can add the apostille to this order.
If you don't have an appointment yet or don't know when you'll need it, you can schedule one later.
An apostille is required for each original document. For example, if you need to have your Certificate of Citizenship and a birth certificate apostilled, add two apostilles.
I am incredibly grateful for the outstanding and professional service provided by Abogado Notario Online Rico. As a military family stationed in Japan, we faced a complicated issue with our daughter’s birth certificate, which contained a misspelling in her name. This error went unnoticed until we began the process of applying for a passport, only to discover that the Demographic Registry refused to correct the mistake. The situation was further complicated by Puerto Rico’s recent amendment to the law requiring birth certificates to include a watermark, adding another layer of complexity. After exhausting all options—including my wife traveling to Puerto Rico to navigate the cumbersome government bureaucracy—we were left with no choice but to pursue a legal appeal in court. That’s when I discovered Abogado Notario Online Rico, which specializes in legal services for cases like ours. From the moment we reached out, the team took over every aspect of the case, ensuring that everything was handled smoothly and professionally from start to finish. Their expertise in dealing with both the legal and bureaucratic aspects of the situation gave us peace of mind, and we were able to receive a corrected birth certificate in a timely manner. I cannot thank them enough for their dedication and efficiency in resolving this issue, which would otherwise have been a long and stressful ordeal. If you are facing similar challenges, I highly recommend Abogado Notario Online Rico for their exceptional service and professionalism.

My father passed away at the end of last year, and even though he lived in Massachusetts, he owned property in Puerto Rico. Since I also live in Massachusetts, I was looking for a lawyer to represent me in Puerto Rico—someone who could handle all inheritance matters for me and minimize the need for me to travel to the island. Since I had previously worked with Ramon Olivencia at Abogado Notario Online on other legal matters, I reached out to him. Ramon immediately understood my needs and established an effective working relationship with me. He was available 7 days a week by phone, text, and email, and often responded to me at night or on the weekends. He promised that the estate and all related matters would be finalized before the start of the 2022 hurricane season. He beat that estimate by a month. Not once did I have to travel to the island for this matter. I highly recommend Ramon and am very pleased with his work.

I found Attorney Olivencia through an online search to help my friends in New York navigate a difficult situation in Puerto Rico. They had to settle their mother’s affairs after her death. Attorney Olivencia was a true blessing! I reached out to him, and he responded and answered my questions. After my friends officially retained him, he handled the matter professionally and efficiently, and my friends didn’t even have to go to Puerto Rico. Now that the matter has been resolved, I’m happy to share how well Attorney Olivencia represented them. He kept them informed about the process and was always available to answer any questions they had. If you need legal help in Puerto Rico, hire Abogado Notario Online. You won’t be disappointed! Thank you, Attorney Olivencia! God bless you.
