More about the Birth Certificate
Who is entitled to apply for the Certificate?
Every person over 18 years of age has the right to obtain his or her Certificate. In addition, their parent, legal guardian, legal representative, legal custodian, guardian or heirs.
How long does the process take and what does the shipping look like?
Normal processing time is 10 working days . We also have an "express" or "super express" service(5 or 3 business days, respectively), for an additional cost at checkout.
In addition, the shipping time ( i.e., the time it takes for the mail to arrive) will depend on the mail service you choose ("Priority" or "Express"). We ship anywhere in the world. For PR or USA, we use the federal mail system ("US Postal Service"). The shipping cost will be automatically calculated depending on the address you enter at checkout. International shipments are shipped via FedEx® or UPS®.
In which languages is this Certificate issued?
This Certificate is automatically issued in both Spanish and English.
Can I correct errors on the Certificate?
Yes, we can correct errors, but through this other link: Certificate Correction.
On what date did the current format begin?
Puerto Rico Birth Certificates had a change in the official format, effective July 1, 2010. This was done to correct security issues. Therefore, they are valid, at least for use in Puerto Rico, only if they were issued after that date. In order to easily differentiate them, these new Certificates are blue in color.
Since when are there records in the Registry?
The Demographic Registry of Puerto Rico began in 1931. However, they have many records from 1885 to 1931, from the stage known as the "Registro Civil". Prior to 1885 there is no documentation, but you could go to the church in the town of birth to verify baptismal records. Also, if necessary, you can search the databases at FamilySearch.org or Ancestry.com. Anyway, if your case is pre-1885, we regret that we will not be able to assist you.
What type of Certificate do I need?
Generally, for the vast majority of cases, only the "regular" Certificate, which is the letter size, is required.
However, if necessary, we can also obtain what is known as the "long" or "literal" Certificate, because it is on legal size paper, which provides much more detailed information. For example, the literal Birth Certificate contains the following additional information: time of birth, name of the doctor and hospital that attended the birth, etc.. The "literal" Certificate is commonly requested by other countries as part of the process of applying for citizenship, for example, in Spain.
Due to the additional time it takes to search the original records, the "verbatim" Certificate may take up to 30 days.
What other Certificates do you process?
It is also possible to process your Certificate of Marriage, Divorce or Single Status, as well as the Death of an immediate family member to whom you are entitled, as explained at the beginning of this page.
To see the complete list of the Certificates we work with, you can go to the Demographic Registry link.
