More about the Certificate of Divorce
The Certificate of Divorce is an official document from the Demographic Registry of Puerto Rico that certifies that you are divorced. This Certificate is usually required if you are getting married abroad, in addition to the Birth Certificate. It is important that if you are going to use your documents outside of PR or the US, you will need to add what is known as the "Apostille" to your order.
It is important to point out that the Divorce Certificate is only only available if the marriage was in PR. In other words, if you were married outside of PR, but divorced here, then no you will not be able to request this Certificate but you can only order a Certified Copy of the Judgment. This is because, if you were married outside of PR, then there is no marriage registered in the system to be able to cancel it. On the other hand, if you have never been married or divorced in PR, then you must request a Certificate of Single Status.
What is supposed to happen when a person gets divorced in PR?
When a person gets divorced in PR, the court is supposed to automatically send the Judgment to the Demographic Registry so that it can be duly registered.
However, it is important to note that in the past this sometimes did not happen. Therefore, even if you have been married and divorced in PR, there is a small probability that the divorce has not been registered in the Demographic Registry. In the exceptional case that this happens, you should take a Certified Copy of the Judgment to the Demographic Registry, so that they can then issue the Certificate of Divorce.
What can I do if I don' t have a copy of my divorce decree?
It is recommended that after you place your order on this page, you email us a copy of the Judgment. If you do not have a copy of the Judgment, we can still process your Divorce Certificate, but there is a small chance that the divorce has not been registered. If that is the case, it is possible to make further arrangements to seek a copy of your Judgment from the court, as long as it is in PR, but this will require a separate order for what is known as a Certified Copy.
On the other hand, if you just need a copy of your Divorce Decree (not the Certificate), then you can order it under a Certified Copy. However, the Judgment takes much longer to obtain, up to 30 days. Finally, if you were married in PR but divorced abroad, you will need to add to your order what is known as an Exequatur, so that you can validate the Judgment.
What if I don't remember the details of my divorce?
If you don't remember information such as the date or the town where you got divorced, don't worry. With the information you will fill in at the time of payment, we will be able to locate your records.
What if they ask me to certify that I haven't remarried?
If, in addition to the Divorce Certificate, you are also required to prove that you have not remarried, we can also arrange for a "Certificate of Non-Marriage".
How long does it take and how does it work?
Normal processing time is 10 working days . We also have an "express" or "super express" service(5 or 3 business days, respectively), for an additional cost at checkout.
In addition, the shipping time (i.e., the time it takes for the mail to arrive) will depend on the mail service you choose ("Priority" or "Express"). We ship anywhere in the world. For PR or USA, we use the federal mail system ("US Postal Service"). International shipments are through FedEx® or UPS®.
In what language is the Divorce Certificate issued?
This Certificate is officially issued in Spanish only. However, if necessary, an English translation, certified by an attorney, can be added to your order at an additional cost.

Notary Attorney Online (store manager) –
In his case, having married outside of PR but divorced in PR, without having the exact date of the divorce, it did not appear in the system. This can happen on exceptional occasions and is beyond our control as we rely on government agencies to find the information.
