Emancipation is the process by which a minor is released from parental authority and reaches legal adulthood before the age of 21.
In Puerto Rico, a minor must be at least 18 years old to apply for emancipation.
Forms of Emancipation
By writing, with the signature of the parents (*recommended method*): Both parents must sign, together with the child, as long as their names appear on the birth certificate.
By marriage: But until the age of 18 the emancipated minor will not be able to carry out certain formalities.
By court: Required if one parent objects. A judge decides after hearing both parties. Note: We do not process judicial emancipations.
Additional Requirements
Birth certificateBirth certificate: Of the minor, in the format that started in July 2010 (blue color). If you do not have it, you can order it with us (if the child was born in PR).
Price: The price varies depending on each case. We charge on a flat fee basis, not by the hour. Clients know the total cost in advance.
At Abogado Notario Online, we take care of everythingincluding the internal revenue stamps, the inscription in the Demographic Registry and the new certificate indicating that the minor is "emancipated".
Conclusion
The emancipation of a minor between 18 and 20 years of age can be done through a deed prepared by an attorney in Puerto Rico.
Online Processing: We work all the preparation through email, but at the end we will require the signature in person, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

My mother and I worked with Ramon Olivencia, Esq. to obtain a Declaration of Heirs. He was very professional throughout our entire online correspondence, which was done in my preferred language, English. He would immediately reach out when he needed documents or when he completed a step in the process. We are very grateful for the service given to us. This agency is very professional, honest, and confidential. Very safe to use his services if you live in the US. I highly recommend him!
