Description
What is a Certified Copy?
By means of a Certified Copy, an authorized public official certifies that a document is a true and accurate copy of the original. The Certified Copy is a common requirement for legal proceedings in Puerto Rico. For example, if you are divorced and wish to remarry, you may be asked for a Certified Copy of the divorce decree. In such a case, however, it is most common that only the Certificate of Divorce is requested, particularly if you are going to be married abroad.
Therefore, if you are getting married abroad, you can order with us the Certificate of Divorce or, if you have never been married, a Certificate of Single Status. These two (2) Certificates, the Divorce Certificate or the Single Certificate, can be obtained more quickly than a Certified Copy as the latter involves searching the court records.
On the other hand, we can also obtain a certified copy of a deed. This is as long as you are listed on it or have the right to be an heir. However, if you need a copy of a will, you should go to this other direct link on Will Search. Inaddition,if necessary, we can obtain documents from the Property Registry.
Who is entitled to a copy of a divorce decree?
It is important to note that family cases, such as divorces, are confidential. Therefore, we can only obtain a copy of a divorce decree if you were one of the parties. Once you place your order, we will automatically send you a Letter of Authorisation, which in most cases must be sworn before a notary, wherever you are located.
How long does it take and how is the shipping?
This process takes up to 30 days, plus shipping time. The shipping cost will be calculated automatically depending on the address you enter when finalizing your order. We ship anywhere in the world. Shipments to the U.S. or PR are via federal mail and international shipments via FedEx® or UPS®.
What if I need to use the document abroad?
In order for the Certified Copy to be valid abroad (outside of PR or the US), an "Apostille" must be applied. This process involves a separate procedure on our part, so it involves an additional cost.
In which language(s) is the document issued?
PR government court documents are almost always only in Spanish. However, if you wish, you can order a Certified English Translation with us. The final price of the translation will depend on the number of pages of the document. Therefore, you should first consult with us so that we can give you an estimate of the total cost before ordering.
